The Best Family Friendly Cruise Lines

Travel guide

Just like when picking a hotel, families look for specific features when booking a cruise,

When planning a trip, keeping the kids entertained is typically top of mind. A family-friendly cruise line will have entertainment for its youngest sailors, such as Kids’ and teens’ clubs, pools, and water slides.

The cabin size matters, too, just as it would at a traditional hotel or resort.

Larger families may prefer a suite over an inside cabin. But either way, the square footage matters — even more so if you’ll spend quite a bit of your time onboard the ship.

Cruise Types and Destinations

There are three different kinds of cruises: ocean, river, and expedition cruises.
Most people envision ocean cruises when they think about taking a cruise. Most cruise lines have at least a few ocean cruise ships in their portfolio and they most popularly frequent the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska, and Hawaii.
River cruises have traditionally been more popular with older cruisers but are now appealing to the younger crowds as well.
Although Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have joined to offer river cruising for families, most cruise companies lack kid and family programs, and some openly prohibit children under the age of 18.

1. Disney Cruise Line

The reason Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list is because it genuinely excels at providing for the needs of the entire family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords.

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Each ship also has various kids’ clubs for passengers as young as 3 years old (a fee-based nursery is available for kids under 3), as well as pools with waterslides and aqua play areas. Older kids can enjoy a little independence in spaces designed just for them where they can play video games, watch TV, and meet other kids their age.

Dining options aboard Disney cruises include main and casual dining as well as adult-exclusive dining options. There are almost a dozen restaurants, cafes, and snack shops on each ship. Some nod to beloved Disney movie characters, like Lumiere’s on Disney Magic and Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder.

Within each ship, there are 4 categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Oceanview with Verandah, and Concierge. Within most categories are family rooms with bunk beds as well as accessible rooms.

Shore excursions include private tours, culinary adventures, and accessible excursions in more than 25 countries. Guests especially love Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, when cruising select Caribbean itineraries.

There are 4 standard cabin types on Carnival cruise ships: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. There are also specialty rooms on select ships.

Family Harbor staterooms and suites are located near Family Harbor Lounges and come with a free evening of Night Owls babysitting, among other perks. Among the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet there are 8 different classes of ships of varying capacities and offerings. The class of ship that tends to be most popular with families is the Breakaway Class. The 2 ships in this class, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, each have a capacity of about 4,000 passengers. Between the 2 of them, they sail all over the world.

What makes this class of ships on Norweigan Cruise Lines so appealing to families is that it feels like a floating resort. These are the second-largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Activities on either ship include multiple pools, a waterpark, and even a full-size ropes course.

The stateroom categories aboard both the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway include Studio, Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Spa, Club Balcony Suite, and The Haven. Within those categories are another 30 stateroom types to choose from, including a 2-bedroom family villa. The Haven is an exclusive set of staterooms at the top level of the ship that features a 24-hour butler, concierge service, and sundeck.

Travel tips

Travel guide

The experience of traveling can be thrilling and enlightening. It's simple to get carried away by the excitement of an adventure. But don’t forget about travel security and safety considerations while you’re abroad.

Follow these 7 travel safety tips to help you take a trip that’s memorable for all the right reasons.

1. Do your research

Discover as much as you can about your destination before you go. For information on the safest areas, accommodations, and crime statistics, read reviews written by other travelers and speak with locals. Check the State Department's website for country updates.

Another important travel security precaution is to know whom to call in an emergency. Get the contact information for the nearest embassy or consulate, police station, and other local emergency departments.

2. Don’t draw attention

People who look like they’re from out of town are especially vulnerable to crime, so try to blend in as much as you can. Select attire that won't stand out and draw attention. Be discreet when looking at maps and approach people carefully if you need to ask for directions.

Also consider wearing protective clothing and gear that will make it more difficult for pickpockets to steal money and other personal items.

3. Make copies of important documents

You never know when you might need a copy of your passport, driver’s license or another form of identification. Scan these documents to save online and print out several hard copies. That way, you won’t be scrambling to find proper documentation if you need to get home.

4. Keep your friends and family updated

Whether you're taking a quick overnight trip or an extended international trip, it's always a good idea to let friends or relatives back home know where you'll be. Send a copy of your itinerary to a few people you can count on to keep track of your whereabouts before you depart. Make sure your contacts are aware of your whereabouts by checking in with them frequently.

5. Be wary of public Wi-Fi

Don't let the ease of access to the Internet impair your judgment. Hackers wanting to steal vital information can access your data when you use public Wi-Fi, including credit card or Social Security numbers. If you do need wireless Internet service, set up a virtual private network (VPN) that will allow you to access the Internet securely while traveling.

6. Safeguard your hotel room

Even if your hotel has strong security measures in place, there are steps you can take to make your room safer. Lock and dead-bolt the door and keep your windows shut. You can buy a jammer, which is a portable device that slips under the door for another layer of protection.

When you're away, try to create the illusion that you're still in your room by closing the blinds and windows and posting the sign that reads "Do Not Disturb" on the outside of your door.

Don’t let any strangers into your room, even if they say they work for the hotel. You can always call the front desk to check whether someone was ordered by hotel staff to come to your room.

7. Be aware of your surroundings

When trying to capture the ideal picture for your social media platforms, don't let your guard down. Always keep a watch on your personal items, and use caution while approaching strangers. A big part of the joy of traveling is the opportunities it gives you to meet new people and learn about their cultures. But if someone near you is behaving strangely or if you feel uneasy, leave the area immediately.

Following these tips can help you travel safely, but no matter how many precautions you take, unforeseen events can still occur. Stay protected with travel insurance, and get peace of mind no matter where you go.
